Next Concert
The Creative Music Guild Presents:
The Outset Series continues with event #3 on January 18th. Remember that the Outset Series is our new bi-monthly (on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays) concert series featuring local musicians. There are several excellent and unique features to the Outset Series. First, we ask for only $5 at the door and because Revival Drum Shop (our partners in this series) is such a strong supporter of this music, they do not take a cut from the door. This means we give 100% of the door to the musicians. It's been a true pleasure for us to be able to pay the excellent musicians who have already played the series reasonably well. Second, the show start at 8 and ends by 10 so you can get home at a reasonable hour on a weeknight. But don't be late - there are only two sets and we start on time. Third, Tiga is right next door so you can enjoy a beverage in one of Portland's finest drinking establishments during intermission. (Not to mention the incredibly well-regarded Pok Pok and the Grain & Gristle are also next door in case you're hungry.)
This time around the performers will be Ben Kates & Jewelry Rash. Jewelry Rash is Brian Mumford's (Dragging and Ox Through Water, Jackie-O-Motherf***er, Sunfoot, Thicket) wildly divergent solo noise electronics set propelled primarily by his homemade oscillators. Ben Kates is a saxophonist originally from Massachusetts. He moved to Portland in 2006 where he has played in the groups Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! and the Naked Future, as well as in a longstanding collaboration with John Niekrasz and Brian Mumford called Thicket. He has played with John Gruntfest, Gino Robair, Tatsuya Nakatani, Wally Shoup, Urs Leimgruber, John Weise and Smegma among others. In addition to being a musician, Kates sits on the boards of the Creative Music Guild and the Independent Publishing Resource Center. Ben will be donating his portion of the door money to the Creative Music Guild - another reason to come out to the show.

The Guild is an all-volunteer driven non-profit organization. Become a member! Play a part in bringing uncompromising creative music to Portland. The support CMG receives from members helps bring artists who would otherwise never be able to perform on the west coast. The Creative Music Guild is an important anchor for many tours. Your membership is tax-deductible. With a CMG membership, you'll get discounts on concerts and receive mailings. Please visit the ticket table to join our mailing list and make a contribution. One or more of our board members is always on hand to speak with you.
